Best Fiber Arts Kits for Screen-Free Christmas Gifts

If you’re looking for a Christmas gift that doesn’t involve another screen, subscription, or piece of technology, a fiber arts kit is one of my favorite options.

I’m a textile artist, costume designer, and lifelong maker, so I’m probably a little biased—but there is something incredibly satisfying about sitting down with actual materials and making something with your hands. And during the winter? Even better.

Fiber arts kits make especially good Christmas gifts because they give someone both a present and something to do. Instead of opening a gift and immediately setting it aside, they can spend an afternoon learning embroidery, needle felting, weaving, macramé, sashiko, or another traditional craft.

I put together some of my favorite fiber arts and textile craft kits for anyone who could use a little more screen-free creativity this Christmas.

Needle Felting Kits

Needle felting is such a fun introduction to fiber art because you can turn loose wool into tiny three-dimensional objects using a surprisingly simple process.

There are kits for making everything from miniature plants and animals to landscapes and seasonal decorations. A complete beginner kit with wool, felting needles, a work surface, and instructions makes a great gift because the recipient can start creating almost immediately.

I especially love this idea for someone who likes whimsical crafts, miniatures, cottagecore, or handmade Christmas decorations.

Embroidery Kits

Embroidery is one of those crafts that can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be.

A beginner embroidery kit usually includes the fabric, pattern, embroidery floss, needle, and hoop, which takes away the intimidating part of figuring out what supplies to buy.

It’s also wonderfully portable. You can work on embroidery while watching a movie, listening to an audiobook, traveling, or just sitting somewhere cozy with a cup of coffee.

Sashiko Kits

If you’re buying for someone who loves textiles, visible mending, Japanese craft traditions, or slow stitching, consider a sashiko kit.

Sashiko uses simple running stitches to create beautiful geometric patterns, traditionally worked in white thread against indigo fabric. The basic technique is approachable for beginners, but the finished stitching can be absolutely gorgeous.

It’s one of my favorite examples of a craft that feels meditative without being boring.

Weaving Loom Kits

A small weaving loom is a wonderful gift for someone who wants to experiment with yarn, texture, and color.

Unlike some crafts where you're following a very specific pattern, weaving gives you plenty of room to play. You can combine different yarns, fibers, colors, and textures to create wall hangings and other small woven pieces.

A loom kit is also a particularly fun gift for someone who already knits or crochets but wants to try another fiber art.

Macramé Kits

Macramé has made a huge comeback, and beginner kits make it much easier to try without buying giant rolls of cord and figuring everything out from scratch.

You can find kits for plant hangers, wall hangings, leaves, ornaments, and other small projects. They're especially good gifts for someone who loves boho décor or wants a craft that doesn't require sewing or knitting experience.

Latch Hook Kits

Latch hook is one of those wonderfully tactile crafts that deserves more attention.

Modern latch hook kits have come a long way from the ones you might remember from decades ago. There are some genuinely beautiful contemporary designs available now, and the repetitive process makes this a great relaxing, screen-free winter project.

Punch Needle Kits

Punch needle combines some of my favorite things: yarn, texture, color, and relatively quick results.

Beginner kits generally include a printed design plus the punch needle and fibers needed to complete it. If you know someone who wants to try fiber art but might be intimidated by traditional embroidery, this can be a great place to start.

Indigo Dye and Textile Kits

For the person who would rather experiment than follow a pattern, look for textile dyeing kits.

Indigo and tie-dye kits let someone transform fabric or clothing rather than simply creating a predetermined project. They're especially fun for creative people who enjoy fashion, upcycling, and experimenting with color.

Why Give a Screen-Free Craft for Christmas?

I love giving creative kits because they're more than just things.

They're an invitation to slow down, learn something new, and spend a few hours making something instead of scrolling. And in the middle of winter, when we're all spending more time indoors, that feels like a pretty wonderful gift.
